Meet Our Team of Urban Entomologists

Most of us don’t give insects a second thought until they invade our space. Then we’re either swatting them away or enjoying them—like the sight of a butterfly pollinating our flowers. But since we’re bug people, we spend more time than most thinking about bugs. That’s good news for you, but bad news for bugs that can be harmful to you, your family, and your pets.

But not all bugs are bad. In fact, many are beneficial and essential to help our ecosystem thrive, which is why we have a team dedicated to studying bugs. Entomology, the study of insects, is crucial for the health and prosperity of our planet. The Urban Entomologists at Mosquito Joe® play a critical role in securing the health and safety of our communities by combating mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other outdoor pests—and the diseases they carry. They are also good environmental stewards, ensuring that beneficial insects are protected and continue to thrive.

Team of Mosquito Joe Urban Entomologists
  • An entomologist is a scientist who studies insects, their behavior, and how they relate to their environment. They learn about insects’ anatomy, life cycles, feeding, reproduction, and pollination.

  • Closely studying bugs helps protect agriculture and timber from destruction by insects and can help prevent outbreak of certain diseases. Insect experts recognize the enormous benefits and dangers insects present and continually work to learn more.

  • Insects are essential for our world. Not only do they pollinate crops, they’re also crucial to the food chain. Entomologists pursue effective pest control methods, while also protecting the beneficial insects essential to a healthy planet.

David Price, ACE – Director of Technical Services

David Price, Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE), developed a fascination with bugs at an early age. He marveled at the endless diversity and complexity of the insect world and how essential they are to every terrestrial ecosystem. Recognizing that insects are vital to humanity and also a threat is the fundamental paradox at the heart of what an entomologist does. Nobody said this job is easy. You really have to appreciate bugs to find the right balance. David’s passion for studying and understanding bugs helps Mosquito Joe find the delicate balance between prevention and protection to ensure our ecosystem continues to thrive.

David has devoted his entire professional life to safeguarding the health and welfare of others. As a member of the United States Air Force and the “Bug Guru” at Mosquito Joe, David has been honing his craft for over 26 years and works tirelessly to improve our methods of pest control while protecting beneficial insects. His work with vector management focuses on limiting and preventing the spread of disease pathogens through insects and mammals and is designed to protect us all from potentially harmful diseases. He really is a superhero when it comes to bugs – no offense to Ant-Man.

David studied Urban Entomology at Purdue University and Microbiology/Food Plant Sanitation from the American Institute of Baking, understanding insects of medical importance found in structures and urban environments. David is also a Certified Mold Inspector (CMI) with licensing for public health. When you want an answer about bugs, David is the “go-to” guy! The guy knows bugs!

His work also includes the development of mosquito abatement programs for military installations and federal properties across the U.S. He has served as the Vice President of the Central Virginia Pest Management Association (CVPMA) and as a committee member for the development of the Virginia Pest Management Association (VPMA) Leadership program. David is frequently consulted and quoted in syndicated articles and on The Weather Channel. We told you, he knows his stuff. He also collaborates with premier chemical companies to improve their ability to target problem pests while protecting beneficial ones.

As an essential member of the Mosquito Joe leadership team, David tests new treatment products, tracks the number of applications applied throughout various regions, develops operational strategies, trains field personnel, and leads the company’s participation in the EPA’s Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (a program focused on integrated pest management). Because of David’s efforts, Mosquito Joe is now a leader in providing natural services according to the EPA’s Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program! How does he find the time? We’re not kidding about being a superhero. Thanks, David!

Shannon Harlow-Ellis, ACE – Technical Services Manager

Shannon Harlow-Ellis, Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) and Technical Services Manager for Mosquito Joe, has had a lifelong love affair with insects and arthropods. From the cool girl who knew all about bugs to the serving Vice President of the Virginia Pest Management Association, Shannon’s passion for insects is infectious. She shares her knowledge with humor and enthusiasm, making her a valued member of numerous professional associations, entomology committees, and pest management Boards of Directors. Who said bug people were boring?

Shannon’s achievements have certainly not gone unnoticed. We’re proud to announce that the National Pest Management Association has selected her as one of the recipients of the prestigious 2023 NPMA Impact Awards for Women in Pest Management! This merit-based award recognizes and celebrates women of excellence in pest management. Take a bow, Shannon!

For the past 20 years, Shannon has been in the pest management industry and educating others about effective pest management and the biology, ecology, and behaviors of pests of medical importance. She provides essential training for pest control franchise owners, service professionals, and the public. Shannon urges all of us to recognize that we each have a role to play in effective pest management. How we care for our yards and gardens can either shelter and nourish beneficial pests or, with reasonable precautions, we can keep harmful pests from hiding on our property.

Insects have been around for so long because they are highly adaptable. Pests’ short, complex life cycles enable them to adapt and evolve resistance to certain pest management techniques. Techniques that are highly effective today may be less effective in the future, which is why continued research is vital to understand and identify effective pest control methods. Staying well-informed about insects can protect you, your family, your pets, and your home from harmful insects. Thanks to dedicated professionals like Shannon and her efforts to educate others, more people can be protected from insects. Yes, she’s a superhero too! Thank you, Shannon!
